Nepal Passport Photo Size and Requirements

The Nepal passport photo size is 35mm x 45mm (3.5cm x 4.5cm, approximately 1.38 x 1.77 inches). Unlike most countries that require 2 photos, Nepal requires 4 identical recent photographs for a passport application. All four must be taken at the same session with identical framing, lighting and expression. The photos must be taken within the last 6 months and the head height from chin to crown must be 32.5mm with a 3mm margin between the top of the hair and the top edge of the photo.

Important: 4 photos required. Nepal passport applications require 4 identical photos, not 2. This is one of the most commonly missed requirements and a leading cause of application delays. Ensure you have all four before submitting. For online applications (e-passport), one digital upload may be accepted but verify with the Department of Passports (DoP) Nepal before submission.

Nepal passport photo requirements checklist

Plain white background — uniform, no shadows, no patterns, no textures. The background must be bright white with no shadow from the subject falling behind them.
Full face front-facing view — head straight, centred, both ears visible (or both edges of the face if hair covers the ears). Shoulders must be visible at the bottom of the frame.
Neutral expression, mouth closed — eyes open and looking directly at the camera. A very natural relaxed expression is acceptable but avoid any exaggerated smile or frown.
Dark or neutral-coloured clothing — wear dark or neutral-toned clothing that contrasts with the white background. Avoid white, light colours or busy patterns that compete with the background.
Religious headwear permitted — head coverings for religious or cultural reasons are accepted. If worn, the full face — forehead, cheeks, chin and ears — must remain completely visible with no shadows on the face from the covering.
No glasses — all types of glasses are prohibited unless medically required with a signed doctor's statement. Sunglasses are strictly prohibited under all circumstances.
No hats, caps or non-religious headwear — fashion hats, sports caps, beanies and hair accessories that alter the head outline are not permitted.
No digital retouching — the photo must represent your natural appearance. No skin filters, brightness adjustments, red-eye removal in post-processing, or any other software modification.
⚠️
Jewellery allowed but must not obscure face — earrings, necklaces and facial piercings are permitted provided they do not cover any part of the face. Large, heavy jewellery that draws attention away from the face should be removed.
Passport types

Three Types of Nepal Passport and Their Colours

Nepal issues three distinct types of passport, each identified by a different cover colour and issued for a specific purpose. All three use the same 35x45mm photo specifications and require the same 4-photo submission. The type of passport you receive depends on your status and the purpose of travel.

📗
Ordinary Passport
Chocolate-brown cover. Issued to regular Nepali citizens for personal travel, work abroad and general use. Most Nepali nationals hold this type. Valid for 5 or 10 years.
📘
Official Passport
Navy-blue cover. Issued to government employees, civil servants and officials travelling abroad on official government duty. Valid only for the duration of the official mission.
📕
Diplomatic Passport
Crimson-red cover. Issued to members of the Nepalese government, senior officials and diplomats. Provides diplomatic privileges and immunities under the Vienna Convention.
Nepal Visa Photo

Nepal Visa Photo Size and Requirements

The Nepal visa photo size is 51mm x 51mm — a square format equivalent to 2 x 2 inches, the same standard used for US passports. This is different from the 35x45mm rectangle used for Nepal's own passport. The square format is a frequent source of confusion for applicants who may submit a 35x45mm photo for a visa application.

Key distinction: Nepal PASSPORT photo = 35x45mm (rectangular). Nepal VISA photo = 51x51mm (square, 2x2 inches). Never use your passport photo for a Nepal visa application — the dimensions are different.

NRN ID

Nepal NRN (Non-Resident Nepali) ID Photo Requirements

The Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) ID is issued to Nepali citizens living abroad and to descendants of Nepali citizens up to the third generation. The photo size is 35x45mm, the same as the Nepal passport, but the official embassy specification states the exact digital pixel dimensions as 400 x 300 pixels (width x height) in JPEG format. The background must be plain white. A signature scan is also required alongside the photo for NRN applications.

Note: The NRN ID embassy portal specifies 400x300 pixels, which does not directly correspond to a standard DPI conversion from 35x45mm. When submitting to the NRN embassy portal, use exactly 400x300 pixels as specified, regardless of DPI calculations.

Rejection reasons

Common Reasons Nepal Passport Photos Are Rejected

1
Only 2 photos submitted instead of 4. Nepal requires 4 identical photos. Submitting only 2 (as with most other countries) will cause an incomplete application rejection.
2
Glasses worn. All eyewear is prohibited. Even prescription glasses without visible glare routinely cause rejection. Remove before the photo.
3
Background not pure white. Off-white, cream, grey or blue-tinted backgrounds fail. Use a bright white wall or paper background.
4
Head too small or too large. Head height must be 32.5mm within the 45mm photo. Too distant from camera makes the head too small. Too close makes it too large and cropped.
5
Photos not identical. All 4 photos must be from the same session with identical framing. Mixing photos from different sessions (different clothing, lighting or expression) will be rejected.
6
Photo older than 6 months. Recent changes to appearance (haircut, weight, ageing) make an older photo unacceptable even if barely past the 6-month mark.
7
Shadows on face or background. Poor lighting, standing too close to the wall, or ceiling-only lighting creates shadows that fail biometric processing.
8
Digital editing detected. Any post-processing — skin smoothing, brightness adjustment, background replacement, red-eye removal — can be detected and will cause rejection.
9
Using visa photo size (51x51mm) for passport. The Nepal visa uses a 2x2 inch square format. Submitting this size for a Nepal passport application will be rejected.
10
Hair covering ears or forehead. Both ears must be visible or the full side profile of the face. Tie back hair that falls across the face or ears.
Photo tips

How to Take a Compliant Nepal Passport Photo

Taking 4 identical photos at home

To get 4 truly identical photos, take the photos during a single session without changing anything — same clothing, same position, same lighting setup. Take 10–15 shots in quick succession and select the best 4 from that same burst. Do not mix a photo from the morning with one from the afternoon, even if they look similar, as subtle lighting and colour differences will be visible when the four are placed side by side on the application form.

Lighting for a white background

Stand facing a large window with natural daylight. Keep at least 60cm between your back and the white wall or sheet to prevent shadows. The wall will appear bright white in the photo only when it is evenly lit — a shadow on the background behind your shoulders is the most common technical rejection reason. If you use an LED ring light, position it directly in front of you at face height to eliminate all shadows.

Head position and framing

The camera must be at exact eye level. Have someone photograph you from approximately 50cm away, or use a tripod with a self-timer. Your face should fill 70–80% of the frame height, with a small amount of space above your hair and your shoulders clearly visible at the bottom. The 32.5mm head height requirement means your face should dominate the 45mm height of the photo.

Children and infants

Children of all ages require their own individual 4-photo set with full compliance — there are no photo requirement exemptions for age in Nepal. For infants who cannot sit independently, lay them on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above, ensuring no shadows from your body fall across the white background. Infants may have eyes slightly closed but all other requirements apply.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Nepal passport photo size is 35mm x 45mm (3.5cm x 4.5cm, approximately 1.38 x 1.77 inches). 4 identical photos are required for the application. The head must be 32.5mm from chin to crown with 3mm of space at the top. Background must be plain white, resolution 600 DPI, maximum file size 300KB for digital submissions.
Nepal requires 4 identical recent photographs for a passport application. This is notably more than most countries (which typically require 2). All four must be from the same session with identical framing, lighting and expression. For minor children, the same 4-photo requirement applies. For online e-passport applications, verify current requirements with the Department of Passports (DoP) Nepal as digital submission rules may differ.
At 300 DPI, the Nepal passport photo (35x45mm) is approximately 413 x 531 pixels. At the official 600 DPI requirement, it is approximately 827 x 1063 pixels. For online digital submissions, keep the file under 300KB in JPEG, PNG or PDF format.
The Nepal visa photo size is 51mm x 51mm (2 x 2 inches) — a square format. This is different from the 35x45mm rectangular format used for Nepal's own passport. At 300 DPI, 51x51mm converts to exactly 600 x 600 pixels. For online visa applications, the file must not exceed 5MB in JPEG format.
Nepal issues three types of passport: (1) Ordinary passport — chocolate-brown cover, for regular Nepali citizens for personal and work travel. (2) Official passport — navy-blue cover, for government employees and civil servants on official duty abroad. (3) Diplomatic passport — crimson-red cover, for members of the Nepalese government and diplomatic personnel. All three use the same 35x45mm photo with 4-photo requirement.
The Nepal NRN (Non-Resident Nepali) ID photo size is 35mm x 45mm, the same physical size as the passport photo. The official NRN embassy specification states exactly 400 x 300 pixels (width x height) in JPEG format. The background must be plain white and the photo must be recent (within 6 months). A separate signature scan file is also required alongside the photo.
No. Glasses are not permitted in Nepal passport photos unless you have a signed doctor's statement confirming medical necessity. Even prescription glasses should be removed for the photo. Sunglasses and all tinted lenses are strictly prohibited. Contact lenses — clear, non-coloured ones — are acceptable.
The Nepal passport photo is 35x45mm (rectangular) and requires 4 copies. The Nepal visa photo is 51x51mm (square, 2x2 inches) and typically 1-2 copies are needed. The two sizes are not interchangeable — using a passport photo for a visa or vice versa will result in rejection. Always check which document you are applying for and use the corresponding size.
