AI Rate Limit Calculator
Check if your AI API usage fits within provider rate limits. Enter requests per minute and tokens per request. See TPM and RPM usage against limits for OpenAI, Anthropic and Google tiers. Prevent 429 errors before they happen.
How to Use the AI Rate Limit Calculator
Enter your requests per minute and average tokens per request. Furthermore, click Check to see your TPM (tokens per minute) and RPM (requests per minute) against limits for 7 provider tiers. Green means your usage fits. Red means you will hit rate limits. Additionally, the percentage shows how close you are to each limit.
Understanding API Rate Limits
AI APIs enforce two types of limits: RPM (requests per minute) and TPM (tokens per minute). Furthermore, hitting either limit triggers HTTP 429 errors. OpenAI uses a tier system based on account age and spend. Anthropic separates Build (development) and Scale (production) tiers. Additionally, Google offers free and pay-as-you-go tiers with different limits.
TPM is usually the binding constraint for applications with long prompts. Furthermore, a request with 2,000 input + 1,000 output tokens at 60 RPM consumes 180,000 TPM. That exceeds OpenAI Tier 1 (200K TPM) but fits Tier 2 (2M TPM). Planning ahead prevents production outages.
Rate Limits by Provider (June 2026)
| Provider Tier | RPM | TPM | How to upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Tier 1 | 500 | 200,000 | $5 spend |
| OpenAI Tier 2 | 5,000 | 2,000,000 | $50+ spend, 7+ days |
| OpenAI Tier 3 | 5,000 | 10,000,000 | $100+ spend |
| Anthropic Build | 50 | 40,000 | Default tier |
| Anthropic Scale | 4,000 | 2,000,000 | Apply for upgrade |
| Google Free | 15 | 32,000 | Free tier |
| Google Pay | 2,000 | 4,000,000 | Enable billing |

How to Handle Rate Limits
Implement exponential backoff with jitter on 429 errors. Furthermore, queue requests and spread them evenly across time windows. Use batch API for non-real-time workloads. Additionally, tiered routing to multiple providers distributes load and prevents single-provider bottlenecks.

Competitor Gap Analysis
No free tool checks your usage against multiple provider rate limit tiers simultaneously. Furthermore, developers currently discover rate limits through trial and error, receiving 429 errors in production.
This calculator prevents production outages by showing whether your planned usage fits within each tier before deployment. Furthermore, the percentage columns make it easy to see how close you are to limits across all providers at once.
