Fiscal Year Guide — How to Calculate FY, Quarter, and Days Remaining
A fiscal year (FY) is a 12-month accounting period that businesses, governments, and organisations use for financial reporting, budgeting, and taxation. Unlike the calendar year, which always runs from January 1 to December 31, a fiscal year can start on any date. The choice of fiscal year start date is typically driven by the organisation's operating cycle, industry norms, or government mandate.
How to calculate which fiscal year a date falls in
The calculation depends on the fiscal year start month. If the fiscal year starts in October (as the US federal government uses), then any date from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025 falls in FY 2025. The fiscal year is named by convention after the calendar year in which it ends. So October 2024 is in FY 2025 even though it is calendar year 2024. The formula is: if the calendar month is greater than or equal to the fiscal year start month, add 1 to the calendar year to get the fiscal year. If the calendar month is less than the fiscal year start month, the calendar year itself is the fiscal year.
How fiscal quarters are calculated
Fiscal quarters divide the fiscal year into four equal three-month periods. Q1 covers months 1-3 of the fiscal year (the first three months after the fiscal year start), Q2 covers months 4-6, Q3 covers months 7-9, and Q4 covers months 10-12. For a US federal fiscal year starting in October: Q1 = October, November, December; Q2 = January, February, March; Q3 = April, May, June; Q4 = July, August, September. For an Australian fiscal year starting in July: Q1 = July, August, September; Q2 = October, November, December; Q3 = January, February, March; Q4 = April, May, June.
US fiscal year vs calendar year
The US federal government's fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30. This means that when the media reports on US federal budget figures for "FY 2025," they are referring to the period October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025. Many US corporations use the calendar year (January to December) as their fiscal year, while others use fiscal years ending in June, September, or other months that better align with their business cycles. Apple, for example, has a fiscal year ending in September. Microsoft's fiscal year ends in June. Walmart's fiscal year ends in January.
Fiscal year to date (FYTD)
Fiscal year to date (FYTD) refers to the period from the beginning of the current fiscal year to the present date. For example, if today is January 15, 2025 and your fiscal year starts in October, FYTD covers October 1, 2024 through January 15, 2025 — 107 days into FY 2025. FYTD figures are commonly used in management reporting to compare current performance against the same period in the prior fiscal year (prior year to date, or PYTD).
UK financial year vs US fiscal year
The UK's tax year runs from April 6 to April 5, a quirk inherited from the 18th-century calendar reform. For corporate and accounting purposes, most UK businesses use April 1 to March 31. When calculating using this tool, select April as the start month for UK fiscal year calculations. A UK financial year running from April 2024 to March 2025 is typically written as 2024/25 or FY2024-25 using the span format, rather than the end-year format (FY2025) used in the US.
Days remaining in fiscal year
Knowing how many days remain in a fiscal year is useful for budget management, financial forecasting, quarterly close preparation, and grant or contract reporting deadlines. If 85% of the fiscal year has elapsed and only 60% of the annual budget has been spent, the organisation has slack to accelerate spending. If 40% of the fiscal year has elapsed but 70% of the budget is spent, spending needs to slow. The LazyTools Fiscal Year Calculator shows the exact day count and percentage complete for any date in any fiscal year.
