Drum Machine Guide — Step Sequencing, Swing, and Velocity
A drum machine step sequencer is one of the most fundamental tools in modern music production. Introduced commercially with machines like the Roland TR-808 (1980) and TR-909 (1983), the step sequencer remains the industry standard way to program drum patterns. Every genre from hip-hop to techno to pop was shaped by the sounds and patterns made possible by these instruments.
How a 16-step sequencer works
A 16-step sequencer divides one bar of music into 16 equal time slots, each representing a 16th note (semiquaver). At 120 BPM, each step lasts exactly 125 milliseconds. A complete 16-step loop is one bar, lasting 2 seconds. You toggle each step on or off for each drum track. When the sequencer plays, a playhead advances through the steps in order, triggering all sounds with active steps at that position. The loop restarts automatically when it reaches the end.
What is swing in drumming?
Swing (also called shuffle) is the deliberate delay of even-numbered steps in a pattern. Instead of steps 1 through 16 playing at perfectly equal intervals, odd-numbered steps play on time while even-numbered steps are delayed by a percentage of the step interval. At 50% swing, every other 16th note falls on the third note of a triplet rather than exactly halfway between beats, creating the characteristic shuffle feel of jazz, blues, and hip-hop. The mathematical formula is: delay = stepInterval * swingAmount where swingAmount ranges from 0 (straight) to 0.5 (full triplet).
Online drum machine free no download — why synthesis matters
Most free online drum machines download audio sample files (WAV or MP3) for each drum sound, which can be dozens of files totalling several megabytes. This means a loading wait before you can play, and audio files being transferred over the network. LazyTools synthesises every drum sound in real time using the Web Audio API: oscillators, white noise generators, filters, and ADSR envelopes tuned specifically for each percussion timbre. No files are downloaded. The page loads instantly. This also means the sounds work completely offline after the page is cached.
Drum machine — 8 questions answered
A step sequencer divides a bar into equal time slots (steps). You toggle each step on/off for each drum track. When playing, the sequencer fires drum sounds for active steps in order. 16 steps = one bar at 16th note resolution.
Swing delays even-numbered steps slightly, creating a shuffle feel. 0% = perfectly straight. 50% = full triplet swing (jazz feel). Hip-hop typically uses 30-40% swing. House and techno use 0%.
Kick, Snare, Closed Hi-Hat, Open Hi-Hat, Crash Cymbal, High Tom, Low Tom, and Clap. All synthesised in real time with the Web Audio API. No audio files downloaded.
Basic Rock, Four on the Floor, Hip Hop, Bossa Nova, and Blank. Each programs all 8 tracks with an authentic rhythm for that genre. Edit from the preset or start blank and build from scratch.
Click Tap repeatedly at the desired beat. After 2+ taps, the average interval is calculated and BPM is set automatically. Useful for matching the drum machine to a song you are playing along with.
Right-click an active step to cycle through high (100%), medium (75%), and low (50%) velocity. Lower velocity steps play quieter, adding natural dynamics. A small dot indicates medium or low velocity.
No. All drum sounds are synthesised locally using the Web Audio API. No audio files are downloaded or sent to any server. The sequencer runs entirely in JavaScript in your browser.
