Frequently asked questions about sheep gestation

Sheep are pregnant for an average of 147 days (approximately 5 months), with a normal range of 142 to 154 days depending on breed.
The ovine gestation period averages 147 days. British breeds average 144-147 days, while Merino and fine-wool breeds average 149-152 days.
Tupping is the term used for sheep mating (when the ram serves the ewe). The date the ewe was tupped is the starting point for calculating the lambing date.
Flushing is increasing a ewe's nutrition 3-4 weeks before tupping to improve body condition and ovulation rate. Well-flushed ewes produce more eggs and are more likely to have twin or triplet lambs.
Ultrasound scanning to determine the number of lambs should be done between day 40 and 90 of gestation. Scanning allows ewes to be grouped by litter size (singles, twins, triplets) so nutrition can be tailored accordingly.
Prepare: clean individual lambing pens with fresh bedding, colostrum (fresh or frozen), stomach tube for weak lambs, iodine for navel treatment, ear tags, lamb coats, heat lamps, and your vet's emergency number.
Lambing percentage is the number of lambs born per 100 ewes mated. A lambing percentage of 150% means an average of 1.5 lambs per ewe. Good management including flushing and scanning can significantly improve this figure.
The softening or disappearance of the tail head ligaments is the most reliable indicator. When you can wrap your fingers around the tail head and there is no firm resistance, lambing is typically within 12-24 hours.
Twin lamb disease (pregnancy toxemia) occurs in late pregnancy when a ewe carrying multiple lambs cannot eat enough to meet energy demands. Signs include lethargy, stargazing and loss of appetite. Prevent with adequate late-gestation energy nutrition.
