Year Progress Percentage: How It Works
The year progress percentage is one of those deceptively simple numbers that has a surprisingly powerful effect on how we perceive time. Indeed, seeing “30.1% of 2026 is gone” feels different from thinking “it’s April” — because the percentage makes the finite nature of the year concrete and motivating.
Time periods and durations at a glance
| Period | Duration | Days per period | Leap year adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day | 86,400 seconds | 1 | None |
| Week | 604,800 seconds | 7 | None |
| Month | 28–31 days | Varies | Feb: 28 vs 29 days |
| Quarter | 90–92 days | Q1:90, Q2:91, Q3:92, Q4:92 | Q1: 91 in leap year |
| Year | 365 days | 365 | 366 in leap year |
| Decade | 3,652–3,653 days | 2020s: 3,653 days (3 leap years) | 2020, 2024, 2028 are leap years |
How is the year progress percentage calculated?
The year progress percentage calculation uses seconds for precision: elapsed seconds since January 1 at 00:00:00 are divided by total seconds in the year (31,536,000 for a non-leap year, 31,622,400 for a leap year), then multiplied by 100. Furthermore, using seconds rather than days means the progress is truly continuous — it changes every second rather than jumping in daily increments. At exactly noon on day 110 of a non-leap year: elapsed seconds = (109 days × 86,400) + 43,200 = 9,460,800. Progress = 9,460,800 ÷ 31,536,000 × 100 = 29.997%.
What percentage of the year 2026 has passed?
Notably, 2026 is not a leap year, so it has 365 days and 31,536,000 total seconds. As a result, the exact year progress percentage for 2026 changes every second and is shown live at the top of this page. It updates automatically, so you do not need to refresh. For reference, on April 20 (day 110), approximately 30.1% of 2026 has elapsed, with around 255 days or 69.9% remaining.
Month progress percentage calculator
The month progress percentage is calculated as elapsed seconds since the first day of the month at midnight, divided by the total seconds in that month, times 100. For example, April has 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), January and March have 31 days (2,678,400 seconds), and February has 28 days (2,419,200 seconds) in non-leap years. This progress bar automatically accounts for the correct number of days in the current month, including February in leap years.
Week progress and the working week
The week progress percentage uses Monday as the start of the week (ISO 8601 standard). Each week has exactly 7 days (604,800 seconds). On Wednesday at noon, for example, approximately 58.3% of the week has elapsed (3.5 days ÷ 7 days). However, the week progress tracker is particularly useful for visualising how much of the working week remains for tasks and deadlines.
How to use the year progress percentage for productivity
The year progress percentage is a powerful productivity tool because it makes time scarcity visible. When you see that 45% of the year has passed, you naturally ask whether you have completed 45% of your annual goals. Moreover, research in behavioural economics shows that people are more motivated to complete goals when they can see exactly how much time remains.
To make the most of this, bookmark this page as a daily shortcut. Furthermore, use the Goal Deadline Tracker to add your most important annual goals with their deadlines, and check the percentage toward each goal alongside the year progress.
Decade progress: the longest view
The decade progress tracker shows how much of the 2020s has elapsed. This decade started January 1, 2020 and ends December 31, 2029. In total, it contains three leap years (2020, 2024, 2028), giving a total of 3,653 days or 315,619,200 seconds. Consequently, decade progress is a uniquely motivating perspective — it zooms out to the longest human planning horizon and makes even years feel finite and precious.
