What Is Pressure?

Pressure Units Explained — Pa, Bar, PSI, atm, Torr & More

Pressure is the force applied perpendicular to a surface per unit area: P = F / A. The SI unit is the Pascal (Pa), defined as one Newton per square metre. Because 1 Pa is extremely small — roughly the weight of a bank note resting on a table — engineers, meteorologists, and medical professionals use multiples and alternative units that give conveniently sized numbers for their application domain. A tyre inflated to 32 PSI is 220,600 Pa, which is awkward; 2.2 bar or 32 psi are both more convenient expressions of the same physical reality.

Why so many pressure units?

Pascal (Pa) — SI base unit, universal in science — Adopted internationally in 1971 as part of the SI system. Because 1 Pa is tiny, technical work uses kPa (kilopascals, 1000 Pa), MPa (megapascals, 106 Pa), and GPa (gigapascals, 109 Pa). Material science reports yield strength in MPa. Civil engineering specifies concrete compressive strength in MPa. Thermodynamics uses kPa. Physics uses Pa. The universality of Pascal makes it the base unit in every pressure converter including this one.

Bar — European standard for many industrial applications — Exactly 100,000 Pa. Very close to atmospheric pressure (1 atm = 1.01325 bar), making it convenient for tyre pressures, diving equipment, HVAC systems, and European industrial standards. 1 MPa = 10 bar exactly — a convenient relationship. Bar is used for tyre pressure labelling in Europe, and in weather maps in some regions (where millibar = hPa is standard).

PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) — US and UK engineering standard — Defined as one pound-force per square inch: 1 psi = 6,894.76 Pa. Dominant in US automotive (tyre pressure, brake systems), HVAC, natural gas distribution, and hydraulics. American engineering standards (ASME, ASTM) specify pressures in psi. KSI (kilopounds per square inch) is used for structural steel and high-pressure systems where psi values would be in the tens of thousands.
Millibar / hPa — meteorology worldwide — 1 mbar = 1 hPa = 100 Pa. Standard sea-level atmospheric pressure is 1013.25 mbar = 1013.25 hPa. Weather forecasts report barometric pressure in hPa (or mbar). Low pressure systems typically read below 1000 hPa; high pressure above 1020 hPa. The World Meteorological Organization adopted hPa as the official SI unit to replace mbar in weather reporting.

Torr / mmHg — medicine and vacuum technology — Named after Evangelista Torricelli (mercury barometer inventor). 1 Torr ≈ 1 mmHg = 133.322 Pa. Blood pressure is universally measured in mmHg: normal systolic is 120 mmHg (15.999 kPa, 2.32 PSI). Vacuum systems use Torr, mTorr, or Pa depending on the vacuum level. Ophthalmology measures intraocular pressure in mmHg.

inHg (inches of mercury) — aviation and US weather — 1 inHg = 3,386.39 Pa. Used for altimeter settings in aviation — pilots set their altimeters in inHg in the US/Canada and hPa in Europe. Standard altimeter setting at sea level: 29.92 inHg = 1013.25 hPa. The aircraft cabin altitude is maintained around 6,000–8,000 ft equivalent pressure.

Tyre pressure — PSI (US/UK), bar (Europe), kPa (Australia/Asia) — Car tyres: 30–36 PSI (2.1–2.5 bar, 207–241 kPa). Always check cold tyre pressure as pressure rises 0.1–0.2 bar (1.5–3 PSI) when hot. Tyre sidewalls show maximum pressure (NOT recommended pressure — use the car door jamb sticker). Road bikes: 6–9 bar (87–130 PSI). Mountain bikes: 1.5–3 bar (22–44 PSI). Run tubeless tyres at slightly lower pressure than tubes.
