Pressure Units Explained — Pa, Bar, PSI, atm, Torr & More
Pressure is the force applied perpendicular to a surface per unit area: P = F / A. The SI unit is the Pascal (Pa), defined as one Newton per square metre. Because 1 Pa is extremely small — roughly the weight of a bank note resting on a table — engineers, meteorologists, and medical professionals use multiples and alternative units that give conveniently sized numbers for their application domain. A tyre inflated to 32 PSI is 220,600 Pa, which is awkward; 2.2 bar or 32 psi are both more convenient expressions of the same physical reality.

Pressure Units by Application — Which Unit to Use When
Gauge Pressure vs Absolute Pressure — The Critical Distinction
Most pressure gauges read gauge pressure (relative to atmosphere). When precision matters — thermodynamics, altitude calculations, vacuum systems — absolute pressure is required.
| Measurement | Gauge (PSIG / barg) | Absolute (PSIA / bara) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car tyre | 32 PSIG / 2.2 barg | 46.7 PSIA / 3.2 bara | Gauge reads 0 at atmospheric |
| Perfect vacuum | -14.7 PSIG / -1.013 barg | 0 PSIA / 0 bara | Absolute zero = perfect vacuum |
| Standard atmosphere | 0 PSIG / 0 barg | 14.696 PSIA / 1.01325 bara | Ambient = 0 gauge by definition |
| Hydraulic system (200 barg) | 200 barg / 2,901 PSIG | 201 bara / 2,916 PSIA | +1 bara offset from atmosphere |
This converter calculates absolute pressure. To convert gauge to absolute: add 1 atm (101.325 kPa / 14.696 PSI / 1.01325 bar). To convert absolute to gauge: subtract 1 atm.

Pressure Conversion FAQ
Multiply PSI by 0.0689476. Example: 32 PSI × 0.0689476 = 2.206 bar. Quick estimate: 1 bar ≈ 14.5 PSI. Type any PSI value in the field above for instant conversion.
Multiply bar by 14.5038. Example: 2.2 bar × 14.5038 = 31.9 PSI. Quick estimate: bar × 14.5 = PSI.
Multiply kPa by 0.145038. Example: 200 kPa × 0.145038 = 29.01 PSI. To convert PSI to kPa: multiply by 6.89476.
1 bar = 14.5038 PSI. Or approximately 14.5 PSI. 1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 100 kPa = 0.1 MPa exactly.
Multiply MPa by 145.038. Example: 1 MPa × 145.038 = 145.04 PSI. 1 MPa = 10 bar exactly. To convert PSI to MPa: multiply by 0.00689476.
Car tyres: 2.1–2.5 bar (30–36 PSI, 207–241 kPa). Road bike: 6–9 bar (87–130 PSI). Mountain bike: 1.5–3 bar (22–44 PSI). Always check cold. Pressure rises 0.1–0.2 bar (1.5–3 PSI) when warm.
Divide Pa by 100,000 (or multiply by 0.00001). Example: 101,325 Pa / 100,000 = 1.01325 bar. 1 bar = 100,000 Pa exactly.
1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 101.325 kPa = 1.01325 bar = 1013.25 mbar = 14.696 PSI = 760 Torr/mmHg = 29.921 inHg. Load the "Standard atm" preset above to see all conversions.
Type any value in any of 14 pressure units — Pa, kPa, MPa, bar, PSI, atm, Torr, inHg and more — and all others update instantly. Visual gauge, real-world context, comparison table, 6 presets. Free, no account.
Multiply bar by 100. This is exact: 1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 100 kPa by definition. To convert kPa to bar: divide by 100.
100 PSI = 6.895 bar = 689.5 kPa = 0.6895 MPa = 6.804 atm.
PSIA (absolute) measures from perfect vacuum. PSIG (gauge) measures from ambient atmosphere. 0 PSIG = 14.696 PSIA. A tyre reading 32 PSIG = 46.7 PSIA. This converter calculates absolute pressure. To convert gauge to absolute: add 14.696 PSI (1 atm).
Multiply atm by 14.6959. Example: 3 atm × 14.6959 = 44.09 PSI. 1 atm = 14.696 PSI = 101.325 kPa = 1.01325 bar.
1 Torr = 1 mmHg = 133.322 Pa. Blood pressure (120 mmHg systolic) = 15.999 kPa = 2.32 PSI. 760 Torr = 1 atm = 101.325 kPa = 14.696 PSI.
1 bar = 14.50 PSI. 1.5 bar = 21.76. 2 bar = 29.01. 2.2 bar = 31.91. 2.5 bar = 36.26. 3 bar = 43.51. 5 bar = 72.52. 10 bar = 145.04. 100 bar = 1,450 PSI. 200 bar = 2,901 PSI. Use the converter above for any value.
Multiply inHg by 33.8639. Example: 29.92 inHg × 33.8639 = 1013.25 mbar. Standard atmosphere = 29.92 inHg = 1013.25 hPa/mbar.
