Thai Buddhist Calendar Converter — Buddhist Era & Gregorian
Convert any Gregorian date to the Thai Buddhist Era (BE) and back. The Buddhist Era year is simply the Gregorian year plus 543 — but Thai official documents, ID cards and legal records consistently use BE, making conversion essential. Furthermore, the tool shows Thai public holidays on the selected date, including Songkran (Thai New Year on 13 April), the King's Birthday and Chakri Day.

How to use the Thai Buddhist Calendar Converter
Understanding the Buddhist Era year
The Buddhist Era counts years from the Parinirvana of Gautama Buddha, traditionally 543 BCE. Furthermore, Thailand adopted 1 January as the year start in 1941. Furthermore, the BE year is always 543 ahead of the Gregorian year. Add 543 to get BE; subtract 543 to get Gregorian.
| Gregorian year | Thai Buddhist Era year | Notable event |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | BE 2566 | — |
| 2024 | BE 2567 | — |
| 2025 | BE 2568 | Current year |
| 2026 | BE 2569 | — |
| 2500 | BE 3043 | — |
Which countries use the Buddhist Era?
Thailand uses the Buddhist Era as its official calendar year on all government documents. Furthermore, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar also use Buddhist Era variants — though with slight differences in epoch calculation. Moreover, Sri Lanka and other Theravada Buddhist countries use the Buddhist Era for religious purposes. Thailand's use is the most systematic — BE appears on ID cards, birth certificates, contracts and legal filings.
How the Buddhist Era conversion works
The conversion is the simplest of any calendar system — a fixed offset of 543 years. Furthermore, since Thailand adopted 1 January as the calendar year start in 1941, the offset applies uniformly for all dates from that year onwards.
For BE 2568 → 2568 − 543 = 2025 CE
Month and day = identical in both systems (same calendar structure)
Pre-1941 dates = Thailand's year previously started 1 April — use caution
The pre-1941 calendar year start
Before 1941, Thailand's official year started on 1 April. Furthermore, this means dates between 1 January and 31 March before 1941 require careful handling. A Thai document dated "15 February BE 2482" corresponds to 15 February 1940 in the Gregorian calendar — not 1939 as the simple subtraction might suggest. Moreover, most modern uses involve post-1941 dates where the simple formula applies without adjustment.
Worked example: Thai passport date conversion
A Thai passport shows a birth date of "12 เมษายน 2550 BE" (12 April 2550 BE). Converting to Gregorian for an international form:
| Thai BE date | Gregorian equivalent |
|---|---|
| 12 April 2550 BE | 12 April 2007 |
| 1 มกราคม 2568 BE | 1 January 2025 |
| 13 เมษายน 2568 BE | 13 April 2025 — Songkran 🌻 |
What is the Thai Buddhist Era calendar?
The Thai Buddhist Era (BE) calendar uses the Gregorian calendar structure — the same months, days and year length — but numbers the years differently. Furthermore, the year count begins from the traditional year of the Buddha's passing (Parinirvana) in 543 BCE. The result is a year number always 543 ahead of the Gregorian equivalent.
Thailand formally uses the Buddhist Era on all official documents. Furthermore, this includes ID cards, birth certificates and legal contracts. Moreover, all Thai government and official websites and forms display BE dates by default, making conversion necessary for anyone interfacing with Thai official systems.
Songkran — the Thai New Year
Songkran — Thailand's most important festival — falls on 13–15 April. Furthermore, the name derives from the Sanskrit "Sankranti" — the solar transition. Traditionally, the date marked the Sun's entry into the zodiacal sign of Aries. Moreover, Songkran is known worldwide for its water festival — where celebrants splash water on each other as a symbol of purification and blessing for the new year.
Buddhist Era in other Southeast Asian countries
Cambodia uses the Buddhist Era with a slightly different epoch — Cambodian BE is one year less than Thai BE for the same date. Furthermore, Myanmar uses the Traditional Burmese Calendar alongside the Buddhist Era for religious purposes. Moreover, Laos uses the same BE system as Thailand. Sri Lanka's Buddhist calendar uses a different epoch — the Buddhist Era year 1 corresponds to 544 BCE rather than 543 BCE.
Why Buddhist Era conversion matters
Thailand is a major Southeast Asian business hub. Furthermore, any company doing business there encounters BE dates regularly. Converting BE years to Gregorian prevents date entry errors in international systems. Moreover, a BE year in a Gregorian date field produces a document dated 500+ years in the future.
Travel to Thailand requires BE awareness. Furthermore, Thai visa stickers and entry stamps use BE dates. Furthermore, hotel bookings confirmed through Thai providers often show BE dates. Travel insurance documents referencing Thai departure and arrival dates may use BE format. Moreover, understanding that "วันที่ 13 เมษายน 2568" means 13 April 2025 CE prevents misreading of travel dates.
How the Songkran holiday affects business timing
Songkran — 13 to 15 April — is a major public holiday in Thailand. Furthermore, many Thai businesses extend the holiday to a full week. Teams coordinating with Thai counterparts must account for this closure in project timelines each April. Moreover, the Songkran period coincides with the hottest part of Thailand's year — making it a natural time for extended leave that further reduces available business days.
