Quick-select tip percentages cover the most common tipping norms worldwide.

The formula explained

Per person = (bill × (1 + tip ÷ 100)) ÷ people
bill = pre-tip total from the receipt
tip = tip percentage expressed as a whole number
people = number of diners splitting equally

The formula first adds the tip to the bill to get the total, then divides that total by the number of people. Splitting the total rather than the bill ensures the tip is also divided fairly rather than paid unevenly.

Worked example: $85.50 for four people at 18%

A dinner for four comes to $85.50. You agree on an 18% tip. The tip amount is $85.50 × 0.18 = $15.39. The total is therefore $85.50 + $15.39 = $100.89.

Dividing $100.89 by four gives $25.22 per person. Furthermore, each person contributes $3.85 toward the tip. The tool shows all three numbers — tip, total and per-person — simultaneously so no one needs to do mental maths.

$25.22 each covers both the meal and a fair 18% tip — that is the number everyone at the table hands over with no calculation needed.

When the split is not equal

Some diners want different dishes at very different prices. In that case, split the bill unevenly first: each person pays for what they ordered plus their share of the shared items. Then add the tip on their personal total using this tool. Additionally, noting each person's sub-total on a phone before running the calculation makes the process smooth.

What is a tip?

A tip, or gratuity, is a voluntary payment made on top of a service charge to show appreciation for good service. In the United States, tipping is a major part of service worker income because base wages for tipped staff are low. Consequently, a tip below 15% is often perceived as a sign of dissatisfaction.

Tipping culture varies widely around the world. In Japan, tipping is considered rude. In the UK and Australia, 10 to 15% is common but not mandatory. In the Middle East, rounding up or leaving small change is typical. Moreover, some countries include a service charge automatically in the bill.

This tool works for any currency and any tip percentage. The calculation is the same regardless of where you are or what currency symbol appears on the receipt.

Why the right tip matters

Service workers in tipping cultures rely on gratuities for a significant portion of their income. Consequently, tipping appropriately supports the people who served you.

Knowing the exact per-person amount also prevents the awkward negotiation that can sour an otherwise enjoyable meal. Furthermore, this tool makes it easy to agree on a tip before anyone reaches for their wallet.

Tips for fair bill splitting

If one person ordered alcohol and another did not, splitting equally can cause friction. Consider splitting food equally and alcohol separately. Additionally, some restaurants will split the bill for you if you ask before ordering.

Round up rather than down when the per-person figure has pennies. Rounding each person up by a few cents means the server receives the full tip rather than a fraction lost to rounding. Furthermore, this costs each person almost nothing.

Credit card splits are easy today — many restaurants process multiple card payments. However, if one person pays the full bill, collect cash or send transfers promptly. Additionally, tipping apps and bank transfer tools speed this up considerably.

Frequently asked questions

Convention varies. In the US, most people tip on the pre-tax amount, though tipping on the total is also common. This tool uses the bill amount you enter, so type either figure — just be consistent across your group.

Delivery tips commonly range from 10 to 20%, depending on distance and order size. Furthermore, many services add their own service fee, which does not always reach the driver.

Check the receipt for a service charge. If one is already added, an additional tip is optional. In countries where service is included by law, additional tipping is purely at your discretion.

This tool divides the total equally. For unequal splits, calculate each person's share of the bill separately, then run this tool for their individual total to find their tip.

Agree on a tip percentage before using the tool. If one person opts out, recalculate with one fewer person and let the rest cover the full tip among themselves.
