How the add page numbers to pdf works
The tool opens the PDF with pdf-lib, embeds a standard Helvetica font, and draws a number onto each page at a fixed margin from the edge. The horizontal position is computed from each page's own width and the rendered width of the number, so it stays properly centred or right-aligned even in a document that mixes page sizes. Skipping the first page shifts the count so the page after the cover becomes your starting number.
Numbers are drawn on top of the existing content at a small margin, so on a page whose text runs very close to the edge they may overlap. Check the output if your document has unusually tight margins. The numbering is plain text drawn into the page — it does not create PDF-level page labels, so a viewer's own page counter (which always starts at 1) can still differ from the printed number when you skip a cover or start at another value.
