How the number to words converter works
The tool breaks the number into groups of three digits, names each group (hundreds, tens and ones) and appends the scale — thousand, million, billion and so on. Decimals are read digit by digit after "point", and negatives get "negative". The cheque format writes the whole number in words followed by the cents as a fraction over 100, the standard way to fill in the amount line of a cheque.
Writing amounts in words prevents tampering and misreading on cheques, contracts and invoices — the words are the legally controlling figure if they disagree with the digits. This uses the short-scale English naming (a billion is a thousand million), which is standard in the US and modern UK usage.

How do you write a number in words?
