Swim pace is usually expressed per 100 metres (long-course/metric pools) or per 100 yards (US yard pools). It\'s the total time divided by the distance, scaled to 100. Comparing your per-100 pace across sets and sessions is the simplest way to track swim fitness. 🔒 In your browser.

How the swimming pace calculator works

Swim pace is your time divided by the distance, expressed per 100 — the standard swimming yardstick. Enter how far you swam (metres or yards) and your total time, and the tool returns the pace per 100 metres (used in long-course and metric pools) and per 100 yards (US yard pools), along with your speed in metres per second. It converts between metres and yards so you can compare training in either pool.

Per-100 pace is the number swimmers actually track — a 1:30/100 m pace is easy to compare across sets, distances and sessions. Yard pools are about 8.6% shorter than metre pools, so a per-100-yard time is naturally a little faster than the same effort per 100 metres; the tool accounts for that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate swimming pace?

Divide your time by the distance and multiply by 100. Swimming 1,500 m in 30 minutes (1,800 s) is 1,800 ÷ 1,500 × 100 = 120 seconds, i.e. a 2:00 per 100 m pace.

What is a good swimming pace per 100m?

It varies hugely by level: recreational swimmers are often around 2:00–2:30/100 m, fitness swimmers 1:30–2:00, and competitive swimmers well under 1:30. Track your own trend rather than comparing to others.

What is the difference between 100m and 100yd pace?

A yard is shorter than a metre (1 yd = 0.9144 m), so 100 yards is about 8.6% less distance than 100 metres. Your per-100-yard time is therefore a bit lower than your per-100-metre time for the same effort.

How do I convert pool yards to metres?

Multiply yards by 0.9144 to get metres (or metres by 1.0936 for yards). This tool does it automatically so a swim logged in a yard pool can be compared with metric training.

Why is pace measured per 100 in swimming?

Pools and sets are built around 25 m/yd lengths, so 100 (four lengths of a 25 m pool) is a natural, consistent unit. Per-100 pace lets you compare a 50, a 200 and a 1,500 on the same scale.
