How the rotate & flip image works
The image is redrawn onto a canvas with a transform applied: the canvas is rotated about its centre by the angle you choose, and scaled by −1 on either axis to mirror it. A quarter turn (90° or 270°) swaps the output width and height, so a 4000×3000 photo becomes 3000×4000. Because the pixels are re-encoded, you can also pick the output format and quality. Everything happens in your browser — the photo is never uploaded.
Rotating by exact quarter turns is lossless in terms of geometry — no pixels are interpolated, since every pixel maps exactly onto another. The re-encoding step is what costs a little quality on JPEG, so choose PNG (or a high quality setting) if you plan to edit further. A common use is fixing photos that appear sideways because the EXIF orientation flag was ignored by the app that opened them; re-saving here bakes the correct orientation into the pixels themselves.
