How the print size & resolution calculator works
Print size in inches is simply the pixel count divided by the print resolution in DPI (dots per inch). The tool works out the print's width and height at your chosen DPI, the image's megapixels, and rates the quality — 300 DPI is the gold standard for photo prints, while large posters look fine at much less.
Viewing distance matters: a billboard printed at 20 DPI looks sharp from across the street, while a photo book needs 300 DPI up close. So a lower DPI isn't "worse" — it's appropriate for bigger prints seen from farther away.

Divide the pixel dimensions by the DPI. A 6000 × 4000 pixel (24 MP) image prints about 20 × 13 inches at 300 DPI, or a much larger 40 × 27 inches at 150 DPI for a poster.
What DPI should I print at?
300 DPI for sharp photo prints viewed up close, 200 DPI for good quality, and 150 DPI or less for large prints and posters seen from a distance. The right DPI depends on viewing distance.
How many megapixels do I need to print?
For a quality 8 × 10 inch print at 300 DPI you need about 7 MP; for 16 × 20 inches, about 29 MP. But you can print much bigger at lower DPI for wall art viewed from a distance.
What is DPI vs PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes the digital image; DPI (dots per inch) describes the printed output. In everyday use they're used interchangeably for print resolution — pixels ÷ inches.
Can I print a low-resolution image large?
Yes, if it'll be viewed from a distance — the lower the DPI, the larger you can print, and big prints are rarely inspected up close. Upscaling software can also add pixels, though it can't create true new detail.
