How the pressure calculator (p = f/a) works
Pressure is the force acting perpendicular to a surface divided by the area it's spread over: P = F ÷ A, in pascals (1 Pa = 1 newton per square metre). Rearranged, force is F = P × A and area is A = F ÷ P. Enter any two values and the tool solves the missing one, and converts a pressure result into the everyday units kilopascals, pounds per square inch and bar.
The same force concentrated on a smaller area produces far greater pressure — which is why a drawing pin, a knife edge or a stiletto heel exerts enough pressure to pierce or dent, while the same push spread over a wide surface does not. This is force over area, distinct from fluid pressure with depth (ρgh).

How do you calculate pressure?
Divide the force by the area it acts on: P = F ÷ A. A 100 N force on 0.5 m² gives 200 Pa. The SI unit is the pascal (Pa), equal to one newton per square metre.
What is a pascal?
The SI unit of pressure — one newton of force spread over one square metre (1 Pa = 1 N/m²). It's a small unit: atmospheric pressure is about 101,325 Pa (101 kPa), and car tyres run near 220 kPa (32 psi).
How do I convert pascals to psi?
Divide by 6,894.76: 1 psi = 6,894.76 Pa. So 200 kPa is about 29 psi. The tool shows psi, kPa and bar automatically for any pressure result.
Why does a sharp knife cut better?
Because the same force is concentrated onto a much smaller contact area, so the pressure (force ÷ area) is far higher — high enough to exceed the material's strength. A blunt edge spreads the force over more area, lowering the pressure.
Is this the same as fluid or tyre pressure?
It's the same definition of pressure (force per area), but fluid pressure that increases with depth uses P = ρgh, and gas pressure follows the gas laws. This tool covers the basic mechanical P = F/A relationship.
