How the eye rest timer (20-20-20) works

The 20-20-20 rule is the standard advice for digital eye strain: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds, giving the focusing muscles in your eyes a rest from close work. This timer runs the cycle for you — it counts down the 20-minute work interval, chimes and prompts you to look away, times the 20-second break, then starts again. Both intervals are adjustable, and it runs entirely in your browser.

Eye strain from screens (sometimes called computer vision syndrome) comes partly from staring at a fixed near distance and partly from blinking less when concentrating — so the look-away break also nudges you to blink. Allow the browser notification if you'll be in another window, and keep the tab open so the timer keeps running. It won't replace good lighting and screen positioning, but the regular micro-breaks genuinely help. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 20-20-20 rule?

A simple guideline for reducing digital eye strain: every 20 minutes of screen work, look at something roughly 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. It relaxes the eye muscles that stay tensed when focusing up close.

Does looking away really help eye strain?

It addresses two causes: prolonged near-focus (looking far relaxes the focusing muscles) and reduced blinking during concentration (the break prompts you to blink and re-wet your eyes). It's widely recommended by optometrists as an easy habit, alongside good lighting and screen distance.

Can I change the intervals?

Yes — adjust both the work interval and the rest length. The classic rule is 20 minutes and 20 seconds, but you can tune it to what works for you.

Will it remind me if I switch tabs?

If you allow notifications, it shows a desktop reminder when it's time to look away. Keep the tab open, as browsers pause timers in closed tabs.

Is anything tracked?

No — the timer runs entirely on your device; nothing is recorded or uploaded.
