How the roas calculator works
ROAS, return on ad spend, tells you how many dollars of revenue each dollar of advertising produced. The formula is revenue ÷ ad spend, usually shown as a ratio (for example 4×) or a percentage (400%). It is the headline profitability metric for ad campaigns: a ROAS of 4 means $4 back for every $1 spent. This calculator returns both the ratio and the percentage, computed in your browser.
ROAS measures revenue, not profit. A ROAS of 4 can still lose money if your margins, shipping and overhead eat more than 75% of revenue. Work out your break-even ROAS (1 ÷ profit margin) and aim comfortably above it. ROAS also depends on accurate revenue attribution.
Frequently asked questions
What is ROAS?
ROAS is return on ad spend: the revenue generated for every dollar spent on advertising, calculated as revenue ÷ ad spend. A ROAS of 5 means you earned $5 in revenue for each $1 of ad spend.
What is a good ROAS?
It depends on your margins. A common rule of thumb is 4× (400%) for ecommerce, but the real target is your break-even ROAS, which is 1 ÷ profit margin. If your margin is 25%, you break even at 4×; above that you profit.
What is the difference between ROAS and ROI?
ROAS compares revenue to ad spend only. ROI (return on investment) compares profit to total cost, including product, shipping and overhead. ROAS is simpler and ad-focused; ROI is the fuller profitability picture.
How do I calculate break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ profit margin. For a 20% margin, that is 1 ÷ 0.20 = 5×, so you need a ROAS above 5 to profit. Use this as the floor your campaigns must clear.
