How the braille translator works

Braille represents each character as a pattern of raised dots in a six-dot cell. This translator maps text to the Unicode Braille block (Grade 1, letter-for-letter), using the standard indicators: a capital sign (⠠) before an uppercase letter and a number sign (⠼) before digits, which are written using the first ten letters (a–j = 1–9, 0). Decoding reads those indicators back to reproduce capitals and numbers. The output is real Unicode, so you can copy it into any document.

This is Grade 1 (uncontracted) Braille — every letter written out individually. Real-world Braille often uses Grade 2, which adds contractions (short forms for common words and letter groups) for speed and space, and those aren't represented here. This tool is for learning, labelling and curiosity, not for producing certified Braille for print embossing.

What is Grade 1 Braille?

Uncontracted Braille, where every letter, number and punctuation mark is written out cell by cell. It's what this translator produces. Grade 2 Braille adds contractions — abbreviations for common words and letter groups — and isn't covered here.

How are capital letters and numbers shown?

With indicator cells: a capital sign (⠠) precedes an uppercase letter, and a number sign (⠼) precedes digits, which reuse the letters a–j for 1–9 and 0. The translator adds and reads these automatically.

Is the output real Braille I can use?

It's the correct Unicode Braille dot patterns, which you can copy into documents and view on screen. For physical embossed Braille — especially anything official — use certified Grade 2 Braille software, as contractions and formatting rules matter.

Can it convert Braille back to text?
