What is a US size 8 in European sizes?
EU/DE 38, FR/ES 40 and IT 44 — European countries use different scales, which trips up shoppers who expect one "EU size". In the UK and Australia it is a 12, in Japan a 13.
Why do France, Italy and Germany all differ?
Each national system evolved from different base measurements: Italian numbers run ~6 above French, which run ~2 above German/EU. The converter maps all three from any starting point.
What is vanity sizing?
The decades-long drift of size labels downward: as average bodies grew, brands relabeled larger garments with smaller numbers to flatter shoppers. A modern US 8 fits a body that would have worn a US 12–14 in the 1970s — and it is why two same-size garments from different brands fit differently.
Is an S/M/L size reliable across brands?
Least reliable of all: "M" commonly spans US 8–10 at one brand and US 6–8 at another. Use the numeric size where available, and garment measurements for anything fitted.
