🎯 Final Grade Calculator

The score you need on the final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight — so with 85% going in, a 30%-weighted final, and a 90% target, you need 101.7% (just out of reach). Enter your values below — results update instantly, entirely on your device.

How the final grade calculator works

needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. Your current grade covers (1 − w) of the course; the final covers w. Solving for the final score that lands you exactly on target gives the formula.

Example: Current 85%, target 90%, final worth 30% → (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%, so an A- target isn't reachable on the final alone here.

If the result is above 100%, your target isn't achievable from the final alone; if it's zero or negative, you've already secured the target no matter how the final goes. Use it in reverse too — try different targets to see which grade is realistically still in play. This is the "what do I need on my final" question, distinct from scoring a test you've already taken.

Frequently asked questions

What grade do I need on my final?

Enter your current grade, the grade you're aiming for, and how much the final is worth. The calculator solves for the minimum final score that reaches your target, and tells you if it's achievable, already locked in, or out of reach.

How is the required final score calculated?

It rearranges the weighted-average formula. Your current grade contributes (100% − final weight) of the total; the final contributes its weight. Solving "current×(1−w) + final×w = target" for the final gives needed = (target − current×(1−w)) ÷ w.

What if it says I need more than 100%?

Then your target can't be reached from the final exam alone — you'd need extra credit or a lower target. Lower the target grade to see what's realistically still attainable.

Does my current grade already include the final?

No — enter your grade on everything except the final. The tool treats the final as the remaining weighted portion of the course.

Is this final grade calculator accurate and private?

Yes. It uses the standard published formula, shows its working under every result, and computes locally in your browser — your inputs are never sent to a server, and the page works offline.
