How the tip calculator works
tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100); total = bill + tip; per person = total ÷ number of people. Splitting divides the grand total, so each person covers an equal share of both the bill and the tip; for uneven shares, run each person's subtotal through separately.
Example: 85 bill, 18% tip, split by 2 → tip 15.30, total 100.30, per person 50.15.
US customary ranges: 15% baseline, 18-20% for good service, 10% for counter service. Mental shortcut: 10% is the decimal shift, 20% doubles it, and 15% is one-and-a-half times the 10% figure.
