How the gpa calculator works
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours), on the standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with ± variations). Because it's weighted by credits, a 4-credit A pulls your GPA up more than a 1-credit A.
Example: An A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class gives (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.
Two things trip people up. First, weighting: a top grade in a small class moves your GPA less than a middling grade in a big one — plan effort by credits, not just by course. Second, recovery math: once you have many credits banked, a single bad grade barely moves the average, but so does a single great one — which is why the final-grade-needed tool is useful for setting a realistic target. Scales vary by institution (some use A+ = 4.3); this uses the common 4.0 scale.
