How the sleep calculator works

A sleep cycle averages about 90 minutes. Working back from your wake time: bedtime = wake time − (number of cycles × 90 min) − time to fall asleep (about 15 min). Working forward from your bedtime: wake time = bedtime + 15 min to fall asleep + (number of cycles × 90 min). Most adults do best on 5 or 6 complete cycles — 7.5 to 9 hours.

Example: To wake at 7:00 AM with a 15-minute sleep latency, five 90-minute cycles (7.5 hours) means going to bed at about 10:45 PM; six cycles (9 hours) means about 9:15 PM.

Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes (individually 70–120), moving through light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Waking at the end of a cycle — in light sleep — is far easier than being pulled out of deep sleep mid-cycle, which is what causes that heavy, groggy "sleep inertia". So the goal is not just enough hours but waking at a cycle boundary: aim for 5–6 complete cycles rather than a round number of hours.
