Seeds per row = row length ÷ spacing + 1 (a plant at each end). Sow a few extra to allow for germination gaps and thinning. 🔒 In your browser.
How the seed & row spacing calculator works
The number of plants along a row is the row length divided by the in-row spacing, plus one (a plant at each end). If you're planting several rows in a bed, the tool divides the bed width by the between-row spacing to get the number of rows, and multiplies to give the total.
Sow a few more seeds than the count suggests to allow for seeds that don't germinate, then thin to the final spacing. Root crops like carrots are usually direct-sown and thinned; transplants like tomatoes are spaced at their final positions.
Frequently asked questions
How many seeds do I need for my garden?
For one row: row length ÷ in-row spacing + 1. A 10 ft row with seeds every 6 in needs 21 plants. Add the bed width and row spacing and the tool multiplies up for the whole bed.
How far apart should I space seeds?
Follow the seed packet — it gives the final in-row spacing and the spacing between rows. Small seeds are often sown closer and thinned; large seeds (beans, squash) are spaced at their final distance.
How many rows fit in my bed?
Divide the bed width by the between-row spacing and add one. A 4 ft (48 in) bed with rows 12 in apart fits 5 rows. Enable the multi-row option and the tool works it out.
Should I plant extra seeds?
Yes — seeds don't all germinate, so sow 10–25% more than your target and thin the seedlings to the recommended spacing once they're up. Thinning gives the remaining plants room to grow.
What's the difference between in-row and between-row spacing?
In-row spacing is the gap between plants along a single row; between-row spacing is the gap between the rows. Packets usually list both — for example carrots at 2 in in-row and 12 in between rows.
