How the mulch & soil calculator works
The volume is area × depth. The tool converts your bed’s length and width and the desired depth into a volume, shown in cubic metres, cubic yards and litres, and estimates bags from a typical bag size. Deeper layers and larger beds need proportionally more.
A mulch layer is usually 5–8 cm (2–3 in) deep to suppress weeds and retain moisture; topsoil for a new bed is often deeper. Bulk delivery is far cheaper than bags once you pass roughly a cubic metre.

How much mulch do I need?
Multiply the bed area by the depth. For a 10 m² bed at 7.5 cm deep: 10 × 0.075 = 0.75 m³ (about 1 cubic yard) of mulch.
How deep should mulch be?
About 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) for most beds — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering plants. Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks.
How many bags of mulch or soil is that?
Divide the volume by the bag size (bagged mulch is often 50–75 litres / 2 cubic feet). The tool estimates bags, but bulk delivery is cheaper for larger volumes.
What is a cubic yard of mulch?
About 0.76 m³ — it covers roughly 10 m² (≈ 100 sq ft) at 7.5 cm (3 in) deep. Suppliers usually sell bulk mulch and soil by the cubic yard or cubic metre.
Does this work for compost and gravel too?
Yes — any material spread to a depth. Enter the area and depth; for gravel you can then convert the volume to weight using its density.
