How the sunrise & sunset calculator works

The tool computes the sun's position from the date using the NOAA solar-position algorithm — working out the solar declination and the equation of time, then the hour angle at which the sun crosses the horizon for your latitude. Sunrise and sunset use a 90.833° zenith, which accounts for atmospheric refraction and the sun's own radius. Enter your latitude, longitude and UTC offset (or pick a city).

Times are local clock time, so set the UTC offset correctly for the date — including daylight saving if it applies. Longitude is positive for east. The algorithm is accurate to about a minute for latitudes within ±72°; near the poles the sun may not rise or set at all.

What time is sunrise and sunset today?

How is sunrise calculated?

From the sun's declination and the equation of time for the date (via the NOAA algorithm), then the hour angle where the sun reaches a 90.833° zenith — the standard sunrise/sunset altitude, which includes refraction and the sun's radius.

What is solar noon?

The moment the sun is highest and due south (or north), midway between sunrise and sunset. It rarely coincides with 12:00 clock time because of your longitude within the time zone and the equation of time.

Why do I need my UTC offset?

To convert the sun's position into your local clock time. Enter the offset that applies on the date — remember to add an hour during daylight saving time.

Why doesn't the sun rise at the poles?

Above about 66.5° latitude, near the solstices the sun can stay below the horizon all day (polar night) or above it all day (midnight sun). The tool flags these cases.
