How the flooring calculator (boxes needed) works
The calculator adds your chosen waste percentage to the room area, divides by the coverage printed on each flooring box, and rounds up to whole boxes (you can't buy part of a box). It shows the boxes to buy, the area including waste, and the total coverage you'll have bought so you can see the spare.
Add a waste allowance for offcuts and the layout: about 10% for a simple straight lay in a rectangular room, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns or rooms with lots of doorways and angles, and up to 20% for very irregular spaces.
