How the gravel & aggregate calculator works

Gravel is a volume job: area × depth. The tool converts your length, width and depth into a volume, then multiplies by the material’s density to get the weight. Gravel and crushed stone typically weigh about 1.4–1.6 tonnes per cubic metre; you can change the density for your specific material.

Density varies by stone type and moisture — pea gravel, crushed rock and sand differ — so adjust the figure for an accurate weight. Suppliers usually sell aggregate by the tonne or bulk bag (about 0.5–0.8 m³).

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply the area by the depth to get the volume, then multiply by the density for the weight. For 20 m² at 5 cm deep: 20 × 0.05 = 1 m³ ≈ 1.5 tonnes of gravel.

How deep should a gravel layer be?

About 5 cm (2 in) for a decorative topping, and 10–15 cm (4–6 in) or more, over a sub-base, for a driveway that bears vehicle weight.

How much does gravel weigh?

Roughly 1.4–1.6 tonnes per cubic metre (about 1.2–1.4 US tons per cubic yard), depending on the stone and moisture. Enter the specific density if you know it.

How many bulk bags is that?

A bulk (jumbo) bag holds about 0.5–0.8 m³, so divide your volume by the bag size. For loose delivery, order by the tonne.

Does this work for sand and crushed stone?

Yes — enter the appropriate density (sand ≈ 1.6 t/m³, crushed stone ≈ 1.5 t/m³) and the tool gives the volume and weight.
